This is an advanced topic and it works only with maaloo Outdoor 8 Version 220.127.116.11 or newer.
This app can use OpenStreetMap vector map files in the mapsforge-format. Currently the version 0.3 of mapsforge is supported with some limitations.
You can import themes into the app. Themes are drawing rules for the vector data. Which data has to be drawn and which color has to be used decides the theme.
Themes are organized in a .zip-File with normally two folders ‘symbols’ and ‘patterns’ which contain .png-icons. SVG-Icons are not supported. The ‘patterns’-folder can be deleted because patterns are not supported.
The .zip-file contains one or more XML-files with the drawing rules. The files must not be saved in an additional folder as parent folder.
The .zip file structure should look like this:
my_theme.zip / symbols / icon1.png (and many more Icons)
my_theme.zip / theme1.xml
my_theme.zip / theme2.xml
Important! Windows Phone does not allow to link .zip files with apps for direct access. The solution is to rename the file from .zip to .mtz (Map Theme Zip ;). The app is associated with the file extension ‘.mtz’ and knows that this file is a zip-file.
You should transfer the MTZ-file to your phone, e.g. by mail. Click on the .mtz-file which will open maaloo Outdoor 8 and import the theme.
Afterwards the theme should appear in the theme selector. Press the ‘…’-button to select the theme from the imported themes list. Press the green OK-button to use the selected theme.
To enable the full rule dependencies to the map data you should disable the speed optimization in the map options. Map / Map options / Map / Speed Optimization = None. The default settings for this option is Medium which disables some types of ways and tags in lower zoom levels, to speed up the rendering somewhat.
There are some sources of themes in the Internet. The themes for mapsforge 0.5 are not fully supported. Better use the mapsforge 0.3 themes. If there are ready made zip’s for download, you should use the ‘normal’ or ‘PC’ versions. the specialized versions for certain apps have different folder structures.
This update changes the way to switch a map and choose waypoint online services. Previously you had to click more buttons to switch to another map or to toggle waypoint services on or off. Now there is only one click to open the “Fast Map Switcher”.
You can choose from the last 3 maps you had used before. At the beginning there are no 3 maps, so you have to press the more-button with the three dots to open the full map menu and choose a map there. If you want to switch to another than the 3 maps you have to press the more-button too.
If you use an offline vector map, you can select one of three themes (design templates). There are the MTB, Hike and Cycle theme. The Hike theme highlights hiking ways. The Cycle theme highlights ways for bicycles. If you use the maps from openandromaps.org you get better results with the themes. Especially the network-tagged ways (regional walking and cycling routes) are more highlighted with maps by openandromaps.org.
The themes are similar to those from andromaps_mtb, andromaps_hike and andromaps_cycle.xml by openandromaps.org with some minor changes.
This update integrates the ability to download OpenStreetMap vector map files directly from the app. There are files for nearly the whole world available.
You can download the files from the map manager. Press the map / download button from the main screen to open the map manager. There is a new Download button on the Offline-page.
This button opens a webpage with all the available maps. You can download a whole country or a part of a bigger country. The download of the file itself is executed by the phones system. You get a notification if the file is downloaded and ready for import. Click the downloaded file and the import will start. This can take a while if the file is big (some minutes for e.g. germany.map with 1.7GB). You can delete the file after import from the downloads folder, because it is copied into the apps storage.
World base map
Especially for the vector maps, there is a new world base map for lower zoom levels. This map is an online map and loads the map tiles on demand for zoom levels lower than 11. Vector map files does not have map data for the whole world, so if you zoom out to lower zoom levels you would not see a map anymore. With the new fallback to the world base map you always see a map until zoom level 3.
You need online access for the world base map, but the tiles are cached, so each used map tile is downloaded only ones.
You can disable the world base map for vector maps in the map options.
On which versions of the Windows Phone OS runs the App maaloo Geocaching and maaloo Outdoor 8 ?
Both Apps started with WP7.1 and were then upgraded together with the OS to WP8.0 and WP8.1.
Both Apps are not developed explicitly for W10M, but run also under W10M (build 10.0.10586.x). Do not use the Insider builds of W10M with this App, there are potentially more bugs.
It is possible that Microsoft prevents the ability to install apps which are designed for WP8.0 or WP8.1 on newer version of Windows 10 Mobile. maaloo Outdoor is designed for WP8.0. maaloo Outdoor (without 8) and maaloo Geocaching are designed for WP8.1.
With the state of today, the following versions are available in the Store (21 July 2016) :
You can add the Geocaching App features into the Outdoor 8 App and leverage the Outdoor 8 App to a Multi-Outdoor-tool. Geocaching and Outdoor in one App… awesome!
You must have been purchased the Geocaching and the Outdoor 8 app. Open the Geocaching App and press the Unlock button in Info / Apps. This will enable the Geocaching-features in the installed Outdoor 8 app. The amount of available Geocaching features depends on the version of the Outdoor 8 app vs. the Geocaching version. But normally both apps are close together.
The former Geocaching/Outdoor-InApps will be not available anymore.
