  1. Hey. Today I purchased your application. But immediately there were a few questions. The first question – downloading updated maps from https://www.openandromaps.org/ and activating them in the program they continue to download from the Internet. How to use them without the Internet. The second question – after paying money, I noticed that the updates came well for a very long time. Are you planning to release new updates or will me have to content yourself with what’s available? P.s. I have a phone Alcatel Idol 4s with Windows (Snapdragon 820, RAM 4Gb…)

    • The offline vector maps do not download from the internet for zoom level greater 10. Only the zoom levels 2 – 10 are downloaded because of the not available data for this area in the vector files and for speed. You can switch off this by the option: map options / Map / OSM-Vectorfile Settings / Use ‘World Base’ map for low zoom levels.
      There are no updates planned. I think Microsoft has more or less given up the Windows Phone / Mobile platform.

      • Hi! Regarding the update issue:
        It’s true that Microsoft has abandoned Windows Mobile. But not the mobile segment. Their strategy is to have ONE Windows, regardless of what hardware you have. So, with Windows on ARM coming this year there will be small computers with phone capabilities. With tools like Xamarin You can convert apps to Universal Windows Apps and even make them working on Android and IOS.
        That said: Do you plan to port Maloo to become a UWP-app (and possibly reach Android/IOS)?

    Maaloo is by far the best hiking apps I used, and is the reason why I chose a Nokia phone, running Windows Phone. Now that Microsoft has announced getting out of the mobile phone business, what is the strategy for you guys ?

  3. I’ve problems to buy the full version of maaloo outdoor 8.
    My testing time has run out and I love this app. The functions are great.
    But i cannot buy it caused on a failure code 805a0190.
    Can You help me to fix that?

  5. Windows phone: App crashes when opening the map. We’re two with the same problem.

    • Got the same issue yesterday, Lumia 950 up to date. It’s clearly linked to the offline maps. If I switch to any online map providers, it won’t crash.

      • Looks like all newer devices (Lumia 950, 640) which got the latest windows update have this issue with the crashing HERE-map.
        Older devices (Lumia 930, 730) does not have this issue, with the HERE-map.

        The online and OSM vector offline maps does NOT have this issue, on newer devices too.

  7. Finnish maps can’t be loaded, where is the problem?
    FTP- ja Rsync-osoitteet ovat muuttuneet, uusi osoite on tiedostot.kartat.kapsi.fi.

  8. I have a basic membership to geocaching.com. On the geocaching.com I can see several kinds of caches that the Search function in maaloo does not find, such as puzzle/mystery caches, EarthCaches and letterbox caches. When I do the search in maaloo I have all cache types selected.
    Is this a bug in maaloo?
    (Otherwise a fantastic program, BTW!)

    • Unfortunately, its not bug, its feature of GC.COM. While Maaloo goes through Live API, the restriction for basic users are applied:

      1) You can only search for traditional/event caches. But can download any geocache type, if you know their GC-Code.

      2) You can download only up to 3 full listings per 24 hour period. But you can view up to 6000 basic versions of geocaches in this period. (Basic versions does not include the descriptions, the waypoints and the logs.)

      Yes, Maaloo is genial app! But is fully functional with Premium membership only.

      • Its great. One more thing yet: Even if reinstall, some very old caches with red corrected coords are visible for me. But newly entered not visible. Maybe any old data remains in phone after uninstalling, and are reused? Or were old caches serviced other way? Its mystery for me…

        • I think I have found the reason. In the past the coordinate override for solved mystery caches were automatically named as “coordinate override” by geocaching.com. Today this name does not exist anymore for newly edited coordinates. The apps runs into an exception while the access to this name property and skips the cache at all. The bug will be fixed with the next update 2.9.4.1

  11. I have a Windows Phone 640 LTE and yesterday Maaloo Geocaching started acting really funny. When I correct coordinates for a cache in geocaching.com, the caches disappear from Maaloo. I cannot find them even with searching the cache name or the cache owner. I just tested this by changing the coordinates online of one cache and it didn´t appear on the map in Maaloo. Then when I changed the coordinated back, I could see the cache in Maaloo again. However, caches that I have changed coordinated to some time ago, show just fine. Any ideas what might be the problem here? Geocaching api authentication is valid.

  12. Hi there, I just want to say i spend some time testing your product and I think you did a really awesome job! I was almost willing to start using a windows phone just to use the app (I normally use myTrails on android). But I realised that Maloo won’t do landscape mode ? so if you keep north orientation then the map is pointing left 😦 I hope you consider a screen rotation/landscape mode. I’d definitely use it then! Thanks and good luck.

    • I was just thinking – as a work around you could have an option to set a West or East orientation so that North effectively became up when the phone was monted on it’s side ? 🙂

    • With 99% all desired map tiles are downloaded, only the final success message is missing. So all map tiles are there, but without an entry in the download list in the map info details. You can delete all map tiles of one map provider in Map Manager / select on map / Info / Cache / Delete Cache.

  14. Hello I downloaded an open street map and everything was ok till yesterday,. All of a sudden the map is not displayed at all. The same applies for tracks or waypoints.

    • The online Maps or offline Vector Maps work?
      The waypoints appear if you enable them in the Layer Menu.

    • Currently not, but a short check showed that there is an option in the GC-API to do this. I put it on the wish-list. BTW a good indicator for a bigger cache box. Nice hint.

I have been using the Maaloo app for a couple of months now and have been logging my geocaches in when I have found them but just recently not all of them are showing the ‘smiley face’ on top of the cache on the map when they have been logged. is this a fault with the app? Has anyone else had this problem?

  17. Have wish/suggestion for geocaching:
    will be possible have cache icons on map marked, when contains corrected/solved coordinates? In cache details are these numbers marked red, but it is visible after clickink on it. For orientation will be better, have marked it directly on map.

  18. Hello in aplication maaloo geocaching filtrer its not work i seen only traditional cache

    • A developer of an app has not the ability to block incoming calls or messages. There exists no system API call to do this. And it makes no sense to do this. This app does not blocks incoming calls or messages.

  20. Hello!
    I have used Maaloo for about six months. I think it is way better than the now canceled app from Groundspeak it self.
    Any way, one thing I think about is that I read in different forums about people who get a Ping in their phones an then they know that there is a new cache nearby, easing up their FTF-hunt.
    Is notifications of new caches from a certain point (home coordinates or current position) something You are considering to implement in the app?

      • Yes. That is true. But the mail is only generated once a day. So by then new caches most likely has already been taken.
        It would be nice if the app could do a “scan” for new caches, that has zero findings, in the neighborhood. Perhaps every hour.

        • Sounds interesting. There exists a background agent behaviour in Windows Phone. I will check if this is possible.
          The background agent could also update the favorited geocaches, the logs.

  21. Hello. I purchased this program on my phone WP10. I Do not know how to activate maps downloaded directly from teleflnu! Help me.

    • You can import raster maps with the file extension “.gemf” or vector maps “.map”. If you downloaded online map tiles in the app, they must not be activate.

  22. Absolute the best app for Geocaching on a W10 mobile.
    Some minor changes would be great:
    – Possibility to order Friends on name or founds or …
    – Desktop tile does not update nr. of caches found

    ein Suchfunktion in Wegpunktlisten wäre m.E. eine sinnvolle Ergänzung.
    Bsp.:
    Die Wegpunktliste hat hunderte Einträge. Mir ist aber nur ein Teil des Wegpunktnamens bekannt, zB weil ein Artikel als erstes Wort steht:
    “ein Wegpunkt” ist der Wegpunktname, jetzt suche ich aber nach “Wegpunkt”, weil ich nicht genau weiß, wie der Wegpunktname genau lautet.
    Für die Online-Suche ist das bereits vorhanden

  24. Since v2.6.1 editing of tracks does no longer work on my wp8.1 phone. Moving of track points does not move the track. In new tracks track points are lost after storing. There seems to be a severe bug.
    Can you please help.

    I buy maalo outdoor on my W10 phone. Very happy with.
    But i have an old samsung omnia 7 with windows phone 7.5, and even with the same account, i can’t get the full version without purchase it twice.
    Is it normal ?

    • Good question. I dont think that the store accepts bought W10M Apps for older WP versions. This works normally in the other direction, from old to new versions. You should get in contact with Microsoft as the operator of the store.

  26. Now I have to change my phone and new is Samsung. Is there a possibility that Maaloo is available to Samsung too? Best geocaching app ever!!

  27. I am using maaloo Geocaching on my Lumia 930 with Windows Phone 8.1 and I am very satisfied with it.
    Now the Windows 10 Mobile rollout has officially started on March 18th and I would like to know if maaloo Geocaching works fine with Windows 10 Mobile.
    Does anybody have some experience with it?

      • Ich habe letztes Wochenende auf meinem Lumia 930 das offizielle W10M Update durchgeführt.
        Es funktioniert eigentlich alles ganz gut.
        Lediglich der Aufruf der “Cache Details” Seite hat immer etwas lange gedauert. Nach dem Einspielen eines weitere Upgrades tritt dieses Phänomen jetzt aber nicht mehr auf.
        Fazit: Ich bin sehr zufrieden.

  28. I can’t get maaloo to record properly a track, while It’s showing another one on the map (recording while following a track). Could you post a guide on how to do that?

    • update: tried again this afternoon: maaloo 7 works perfectly, recording correctly my route, while maaloo 8 records just a few points (5-6).
      I have a Lumia 435.

      • Do you use Windows 10 Mobile? Perhaps it is a problem if you use more than one app with GPS access at the same time.

          On W8.1, Maaloo 8 didn’t work under lock screen, while maaloo 7 did.

  30. Wird eigentlich nur noch maaloo outdoor weiter entwickelt?
    Ich besitze nämlich ein Lumia 950 und die geocaching Version, kann aber auf der Karte nix anklicken. 😦

    • Das Anklicken ist glaub ich um ein paar Pixel versetzt nach unten beim L950. Das wird noch bereinigt.
      Was fehlt dir an der Geocaching-Version?
      Aktuell ist beim Thema Outdoor mehr Potential. Prinzipiell wird aber die Geocaching-Version auch aktualisiert, nur langsamer, weil man mit dem aktuellen Stand durchaus gut umgehen kann.

      • Hi, also mehr fehlt zum Beispiel das ich alle Trackables auf “Visit” setzen kann. Ich muss immer Einzel auswählen und das finde schon ein wenig nervend, denn wenn ich auf Tour gehe sind immer so 3-5 TB dabei. Vielleicht habe ich die “alle” Funktion aber auch übersehen. Was bei mir auf dem 730 auch sehr lange dauert ist die Kartenaktualisierung, das ist zwar störend aber die Funktion fehlt ja nicht …. 😊

        • Für den Auto-Visit gibt es beim Erstellen eines Logs unten im Menü einen Menüpunkt “Log Einstellungen…”, dort kann man einen Haken bei “Trackables autom. als besucht loggen” machen.

      bei mir wird auf der Live-Kachel nicht die aktuellen Funde gezeigt, obwohl ich wie damals im Forum geschrieben mein Profil aufgerufen habe. Habe am PC die letzten Caches geloggt.

      • Heart rate monitor. Would be great to have full featured outdoor navigation with HR recording capabilities. There is nothing like that in the store. Exported GPX with HR data could be then imported into eg Endomondo or anything else.

          • I use Polar H7 with lumia 920. Anything using Bluetooth Smart would work. Now I have to choose: have HR data or have great outdoor navigation.

              • Doesn’t have to be a separate application. Just an option in the current one. LIke some Garmin GPS devices can record HR or cadence.

                There are quite a few sports tracking apps, but not an outdoor one with HR recording. Maps used in those applications are poor for outdoor usage (not for a park ride of course but for a more serious outdoor scenarious).

  32. Please make maaloo geocaching also for the Android-phones. I had to change my windows phone for the android one, and there’s no good geocaching software for the android.

  34. Hello, unfortunately my app maaloo geoacaching doesn’t work at the moment in Nokia Lumia 520. Problem is that message “ACCES TOKEN IS EXPIRED” appears after startup of app 😦 Could you please advise how to fix this? Thank you in advance. Martin

    • Log out of your geocaching Profil and then log in again. Pls use the Forum, there is the answer of your question too ;o)
      You must login all 90 days, because geocaching.com changed her api.

  36. Hello,

    The Czech map provider Mapy.cz (whose maps are top notch and often requested by Czech users of Maaloo as I noticed) recently changed the way it numbers its tiles. It is now using the same coordinate system as other common map providers, which means it can be added easily to Maaloo! I already added the layers manually for myself (tourist, bicycle, aerial and historical), but if you wish, you can add a preset for them to boost app popularity for Czech users. The only problem is it numbers its servers m1, m2, m3, and m4 which I couldn’t replicate properly with the available options (OSM seems to use letters a, b, c, … instead of numbers 1, 2, 3, …), but that does not matter too much.

    • You can use the server count > 1 if you replace the server number by m{0:1} and the map tiles at the end with {1}-{2}-{3}.
      The {0:1} means that the server number should be replaced by the placeholder 0 but starting with 1.

      • Well, I tried it, and it seems extremely buggy. Once I use “m{0:1}”, the “:1” disappears after I save my changes. Then, it sometimes works, substituting m1 – m4 correctly, and sometimes (e.g. after app restart) it stops working, substituting ma – md incorrectly (as seen by analyzing network traffic). It just seems random. So far, I concluded using one fixed server is the only stable option.

        • Yes it is a little bit buggy. If you save the changes with the :1 it stays there. You must add this every time you open the settings again.

    First, thank you very much for your apps. I bought both Outdoor and Geocaching with all in-apps to show my support… My questions:

    1) What is the difference between Outdoor and Geocaching with all in-apps? I noticed Outdoor getting more updates lately. Should I switch to it even though I am using Geocaching?

    2) While the map is displayed, after a while all controls disappear and four informational numbers appear in the corners. Can this be disabled? I have not found a way if there is one (tried turning off “quick info” in options, but that is apparently not it). I would like if there was an option to keep controls always on. Additionally, there could be an option to turn off individual informational fields (by e.g. choosing “None” for “Info #”) and if all four were turned off, controls would stay always on.

    • 1) There is no difference between the two apps if you enable all InApps. You get a merged app. The Outdoor-App has potentially more features and get more updates. The geoaching-version gets them later.
      2) Nive idea with “None” field. I think I will implement this 🙂
      The option to disable the disappearance will be reimplemented.

    • The WMS-support comes later. First the OSM vector maps must work faster. Some improvements for the waypoints comes next. WMS perhaps in 6 months, sorry.

    Due battery life.

    It would be great if it was set interval readings from the GPS module. Should be from 1 second to 600 seconds.

    This action was good for battery life-drain.

  41. In maaloo Geocaching 2.7.2 wurde das GC-Profilbild fürs LiveTile entfernt.
    Warum das denn ?!?!?!?

    Das LiveTile war auch eines der Gründe, warum ich diese App gegenüber anderen GC-Apps bevorzugt habe, denn es schaut total schick aus.

    Bitte wieder in Einstellungen -> LiveTile verfügbar machen.

  42. Nachdem ich jetzt endlich auch ein WP8 habe freue ich mich, endlich auch wieder die aktuelle Version von maaloo zu bekommen. 🙂
    Das Munzee nicht mehr unterstützt wird, nachdem Munzee seine Datenbank “verschlossen” hat, hatte ich schon mitbekommen…. Die Munzee App wird auch nicht weiterentwickelt. Schade… Auf der Munzee Homepage wird bei API dafür geworben, App Entwicker zu unterstützen. Gäb es noch eine zweite Chance Munzee in maaloo zu integrieren?

    • Immer ran, es darf mit entwickelt werden, als “PlugIn”. 😉
      Ich hab schon Kontakt aufgenommen zu den munzee-Entwicklern und auch ein Zugang zum API-Programm erhalten, bin aber zu noch nichts diesbezüglich gekommen. Der Zeitplan ist voll und munzee steht leider nicht ganz oben auf der Prio-Liste.

  43. Also das neue maaloo Geocaching Icon (mit den Strahlen) schaut ja nicht besonders toll aus.
    Passt irgendwie nicht zu dem hervorragendem Gesamteindruck, den diese App bei mir hinterlässt.

        • Da wirst du dich über v2.7.1.1 freuen, das entstrahlt etwas die Strahlen beim Icon und bringt das alte Icon als LiveTile zurück, per Option.

  44. Hallo ich würde gerne Karten auf meiner SD Karte speichern, kann aber leider den Ordner map – Verzeichnis nicht finden! Habe ein Nokia Lumina 850, wie kann ich Karten auf der SD Karte speichern ? Gruß Robert

    • Der Ordner muss erst noch angelegt werden, über den Windows-Explorer. Einfach Telefon anschließen, im Explorer erscheint das Telefon, dort SD-Karte auswählen und den neuen Ordner ‘map’ anlegen.

      • Hallo habe ich schon versucht, habe einfach auf der SD Karte einen Ordner mit map angelegt, die Karten werden nicht im Programm Maaloo unter SD Karte angezeigt

          • Habe ich ja drin und zwar die City Karten die ich auf Ihrer Seite über den Download gedownloadet habe werden trotzdem nicht angezeigt, wie muss ich den Ordner denn genau nennen?

            • Hallo hat funktioniert, vielen dank für die mühe! Wo bekommt man eigentlich Kartenmaterial her mit der Endung gemf her?

            • Mit der App “Pocket File Manager” müsste die SD-Karte angezeigt und der Ordner “map” (alles klein) erscheinen, mit den ganzen .gemf-Dateien darin. Im Pocket File Manager erscheint das als “ROOT: SD Card\map” wenn man auf den map-Ordner geklickt hat. Auf einem Lumia820 funktionienrt es so.

              • Hi, sorry, I’m no expert, I’ve bought the pocket file manager to be able to follow your instructions but I don’t find any map in any file neither in “local storage” nor in “sd-card”. In the settings of the Lumia 630 you can choose music videos and other downloads to be saved on the sd-card (which I did), so the maps might be there, but I don’t see them ???
                Apart from that I’m quite happy with maaloo, although one detail in the track data seemed not quite probable: I walked 6km and ascended 1560 meters??? Not in the Alps, just some moderate hills in the East of Bavaria…

                  Ich habe zwar keine SD-Karte, aber ich hatte mit Pocket File Manager am Anfang auch das Problem, dass bestimmte Verzeichnisse wie Musik, Videos usw. nicht angezeigt wurden.

                  Ich musste erst “Add Provider” und dann “Phone Folder” wählen, dann wurde mir eine Liste von verschiedenen Verzeichnissen angezeigt. Sobald man welche davon auswählt, sind sie sofort in Pocket File Manager verfügbar.

                  Vielleicht ist das ja bei der SD-Karte auch so ähnlich.

  47. Maaloo with IGN maps (France)

    Would it be possible to have IGN maps as option. They are quite detailed maps for hiking activities in France (see OptiCartes app). If not could you give some instructions on how to connect them as “User defined”?

    • The geoportail.gouv.fr uses WMS to transfer map tiles. WMS is currently not supported by maaloo, but it is planned for a later update this year. Sorry for now.

  48. Hi, I bought maaloo outdoor but I had to reiniciate my phone, now I dont hace the whole app… How do I get the complete app? Would you give a Key or how?

    • If you connect your phone to the same Live-account as before you get all your bought apps back. I have no influence to the bought-state of the app. Sorry.
      There is no special key to unlock the app.

    i use the gpx files as mtb routes. i practised other app (viewranger) and its navigation function that drives you (on the map) through the waypoints of the gpx file. it has an alert that advise you when cross a waypoint and if you are too far away from the line between two following waypoints. does your app work in the same way? many thanks and regards.

    • Hi, currently an alert bells only with one single selected waypoint. But your described multi waypoint alert and the distance from route alert is planned. I have no reliable timeline for this feature (~summer 2014).

  50. Ich weiß nicht, ob es so etwas bereits gibt, aber eine Feature Matrix zur Gegenüberstellung von Outdoor und Geocaching wäre nicht verkehrt. Die Apps sehen sich verflucht ähnlich und da auch in der Beschreibung von Outdoor einige Geocaching Features genannt werden, wäre so eine Matrix enorm praktisch.

      die beiden Apps werden in Zukunft noch gleicher werden. Die eine App bezieht sich mehr auf Geocaching mit speziellen Funktion genau dafür. Die Outdoor eher auf das Tracking und Routen. Man wird später per In-App-Käufe die Funktionalitäten beider “Welten” in einer App vereinigen können. Wenn es dann soweit ist, gibt es auch eine Feature-Matrix, um die Unterschiede besser herauszustellen. Noch etwas Geduld 😉

      like you prefer. The forum is helpful if your bug is not really a bug than an misunderstanding. Perhaps some one else can answer your question faster than I can do. 😉

      • OK 🙂 I haven’t reported so many bugs, as the app is damn good, but it was to be sure it’s taken into account (so far, I’ve reported that timestamp bug for logs, and, as wishlist, a counter + a way to mark our owned caches differently to avoid confusion).

  52. gibt es keine Updates mehr für maaloo geocaching auf Windows Phone 7 Handys? Hab gerade festgestellt, dass ich noch Version 1.95 habe und im Store gibt es für mein Gerät nix Neueres.

    • Hallo Roland, ja das ist so. WP7 wird nicht mehr mit Updates bedacht, weil die neuen Funktionen auch immer mehr von speziellen WP8-Funktionen und geänderten APIs abhängen. Zweigleisig zu fahren ist da zu aufwendig, zu mal es fast nur noch WP8-Nutzer gibt

    Please add to Monitor screen the Average Speed (very useful on hiking) parameter / option.

    Double clicking on Stages (Geocache details) throws an exception.

    etc

    I am not able to add any new stages, thus makes it pretty hard to find some geocaches.

    • Yes thats right, a bug. DoubleTap is not supported yet. But you can press the ‘+’-button from the menu to add a stage to the cache 🙂

    I have been using the application on Lumia925 for about 6 months now. Mostly it works as expected but a couple of times I have had to change the log date after downloading the logs to geocaching.com.
    The most recent occurence was when I went hiking in Japan (time there: UTC -9h) and after getting back to hotel I sent the 25 logs created in the app during the day. Everything went smoothly but when I checked my logs on geocaching.com, more than half of them showed a wrong date (12th Feb instead of the correct 13th Feb). Could this somehow be caused by the time difference between Japan and west coast of USA?

    • Thanks for your hint. Yes, the UTC-time-differences are currently not respected as they should. I will check this.

  57. Hallo, ich habe vor kurzem maaloo Geocaching installiert und bin absolut begeistert!!!
    Ich experimentiere gerade mit verschiedenen Offline-Kartentypen und habe eine Frage dazu:
    Wie kann ich auf meiner Karte zwischen verschiedenen Typen wechseln?
    Habe zum Beispiel MapQuest und Toner heruntergeladen, aber ich finde nirgendwo eine Möglichkeit, zwischen den beiden zu wechseln.
    Unter “Karten verwalten” habe ich sowohl unter “Karten” als auch unter “Downloads” den Punkt “User-Karte einstellen”, der aber immer grau ist, und damit nicht anwählbar.

    • Hallo Markus,
      die heruntergeladenen Karten sind “einfach da”, man kann die nicht explizit anwählen. maaloo verwendet immer zuerst heruntergeladene Kartenteile, dann die aus dem Internet. Man muss nur den Kartentyp auswählen, während man die Karte benutzt, mittels Layer-Knopf und Seite “Karten”.
      Wegen der benutzerdefinierten Karte, gibt es hier eine kurze Anleitung:

      • Danke, das war der entscheidende Hinweis: Ich hatte zwar den Layer-Knopf schon ausprobiert, allerdings übersehen, dass es dort neben der Seite “Inhalte” auch eine Seite “Karten” gibt.

Hallo, ich habe das Maaloo auf meinem Handy und würde gerne die Caches auf der Karte angezeigt werden speichern, jedoch wenn ich das versuche kommt immer ein schwarzer Bildschirm mit vielen Fehlmeldungen und zwar at Myrax.Model.WayPoint.scapeString(String Content), woran liegt das? Ich muss wohl dabei sagen ich bin kein Premium Mietglied, aber dafür sollte man den Hacken ja setzten um die komplette Beschreibung zu bekommen oder sehe ich das falsch? Oder habe ich eine andere Möglichkeit die Caches im Vorfeld zu speichern damit ich sie Offline abrufen kann?

    • Hallo Robert,

      upps, ja das ist ein Bug. Für Basic-Mitglieder ist die Funktion “Cache speichern” aktuell nicht sinnvoll nutzbar. Wird mit V2.22 (Feb’14) geändert.
      Offline Caches speichern geht damit erstmal nur, indem du sie einzeln als Favorit speicherst. (Der Knopf mit dem Stern). Oder dir von einem Premium-Freund eine GPX-Datei “borgst” 😉

    I have GPX file that contains 200-300 different tracks (about 1000 km) and I need to view them at the same time on map. It would be great if there were a way to “select all” tracks from the list or a different way to view gpx files like these.

    Anyway thanks for a great app! I buy and recommend it immediately when this problem is solved. I am also pretty sure that there are a lot of new buyers when this possible.

    • Sorry, but it is not possible to show more than 3 active tracks on the map, because of performance reasons. Normal tracks have approx. up to ~1000 points. After 3x 1000 points to manage on the map, the usage gets slow. To prevent this, the number of active tracks is limited. Perhaps you can merge the tracks with an offline tool in advance.
      Why you have 300 tracks in one file? What is your purpose?

      • It would be useful for all Finnish snowmobile riders, because the tracks are recorded by other riders and they are only available in GPX files.

        But yeah, i should try to merge the tracks and see if that works. Other applications get a little slow when these large GPX files are loaded, but they still can follow you quite well. Only zooming needs some patience.

    • You support the further development of the app as major reason 😉
      The Go-button will not work after 20 times of usage. You have only 5 favorite waypoints. You can download only 1 map for offline usage.

      This will deactivate the munzees

  62. Application throws an exception if GC Live API does not response. That exception causes the application to crash.
    version 1.93.

    • I have catched some of the exceptions but not all. They are hard to test because normally the API anwers in time. In which situation happened this exception?

      • Today http://www.geocaching.com site was down. So GC Live API was also down at the same time. That exception happened when “loading new caches” (that button on map). There was the API call visible, but i don’t remember what it was, sorry about that. Maybe it was “GetMoreGeocaches” or similar.

        Workaround was to to Map -> Layers -> Disable Geocaching Live.

  63. Hi,

    Here is some feedback related to “Stages”.

    1/ If you add a new stage to a geocache and then you update the geocache, user defined stages gets deleted.

    2/ Bearing of a new stage
    If possible add selection for start coordinate
    a) Current location
    b) Any of stages (original cache location, user defined waypoints and changed coordinates)
    c) user defined location

    3/ Editing user defined stage
    There is not an option to edit user defined stage. In case you make a mistake in calculation etc, end user needs to delete the current stage and create a new one. Better option would be to provide option to edit the user defined stage.

    4/ It is really good that waypoints (stages) associated with a geocache is shown on map when you are navigating to any of the points of that geocache. And there is possibility to navigate to the Stages.

    But when you click the stage e.g. Parking place, the cache description is opened and if you click “Go” in that view it navigates to the cache, well that is obvious. Maybe it would be better to open the “Stages” view and the clicked waypoint automatically selected, so then it would be quicker and easier to navigate to stage points.

  64. Hi,

    I have been using this application now couple of times for searching a geocache and here is new feedback.

    1/ Notes
    When making a new note “Log -> Note” there is an option to copy the content to log “copy to log”. But when you are in “Notes” there is not that option.

    2/ Running in background
    Application does not support feature to run GPS capturing in background. This leads to a situation where you are
    a) driving a car
    b) bicycling
    c) walking near the cache
    that display is turned off and once you turn it on, the GPS signal is lost. If you are in forrest it take some time to get GPS fix again.

    Please make option to run GPS in background.

    3/ Gestures
    Gesture to rotate map freely is not a good feature, since the map rotates so easily when zooming the map. From usability point of view map should be in two different mode
    a) Track Up
    b) North up

    Other options are not needed.
    Currently “North Up” selection removes that gesture. That is the reason why I am using the North Up mode.

    4/ Behavior near the cache.
    GPS signal is not accurate in e.g. forrest. So when you first time arrive to a “zero point” application stops navigation to the geocache and shows the pop up window. Then you have activate navigation again and most likely couple times more if the area does not have good GPS signal.

    Application should navigate to the cache as long as end user makes explicit cancellation “Cancel Target” or makes a log.

    5/ Landscape support
    Landscape is not supported in any views. I would add support for
    a) MAP view. While driving a car the device may be in landscape mode in a mount and it would be nice to follow the map without any user interactions. Makes driving a car more safely.
    b) All log views (new log, Notes, etc)
    c) Cache view (Geocache, Logs, Stations, Trackables)

    6/ Display is turning off
    Add options to settings to disable automatic display shutdowns. This feature with 5a makes driving a car more safely. Also when you are searching the geocache you don’t have to enable screen every time when it is dimmed.

    7/ Database support for Online geocaching
    Application does not store any online geocaches to any database. So if you don’t have a gpx file and you want to load geocaches with this application e.g. using Hotels WLAN connection abroad geocaches are not stored anywhere. The geocaches are usable only during the run time of the application. Or if the application crashes, you lost everything you have loaded so far.

    Please implement a database for geocaches fetched online. When “refreshing” the map view it can update the database with new data etc. Also option to flush the database is important.

    This database should not be mixed with GPX files. Those GPX files should be separate databases as those are currently.

    This application is the best geocaching application currently available for WP8, keep on working to improving the features and usability. There will be more satisfied end users.

    • Hi Mileleo,
      thanks for your detailed feedback. You provide very good suggestions.
      I have some answers:

      1) You can “edit” the note and then use the copy-button. There is no place on the Notes-page for a direct button to copy to logs, may be as an menu item.

      2) In settings you can enable the option to “Disable Idle Mode”. The map and compass keep on. Works on my HD7.

      3) Good point. I will see how to improve this. I use the compass aligned map rotation, so the map constantly rotates back to my view after a zoom-gesture.

      4) I click on “No” to not cancel the navigation. But perhaps this “Reached your target”-dialog could be disabled in settings.

      5) This a much work, escpecially for the map. This will take some time. Not with the near next version 😉

      6) see 2.

      7) Good point. An integrated SQLlite-DB would resolve this feature. This needs also a little bit more work, but would eleminate the need for a huge collection of GPX-files. Perhaps with option to import/export for easier handling on the PC. Is noticed as to do 🙂

      • Hi, question about the 2): Have you used for this feature the “PhoneApplicationService.Current.UserIdleDetectionMode = IdleDetectionMode.Disabled;”, or also the “PhoneApplicationService.Current.ApplicationIdleDetectionMode = IdleDetectionMode.Disabled;”? I’m asking because the latter one would also enable the running under the lock screen…

        ps. Great software anyway! I like the the ability to download maps and use the offline.

        thanks for this hint. 🙂 Thats the fact I searched for. I used only the first option until now.
        This would also enable the possibility to implement a proximity sensor alert, which crys if you come nearer to the cache. For distances 100m, 50m and 10m (or configurable). Nice.

  65. Is it possible to use topographic map by wms-server or tile-server links?

    • Good news. The next version 1.93 cooming in 3-4 weeks will have a user defined map provider. You can set the path to a tile-server of your choice. Download for offline use is also supported.
      Which tile-server will you use? So I can take it as an test-example…

  66. Ein absolutes Killer-Feature und Must-Have wäre, wenn die App einen Wherigo-Player bekommen würde. Damit würde sie gegenüber der offiziellen Groundspeak App einen ordentlichen Mehrwert bieten. Ansonsten hat sich die App wirklich zu einem tollen Produkt gemausert. Nur weiter so!

    • Das wäre sicherlich ein sinnvolles Feature. Der Aufwand ist allerdings nicht zu unterschätzen. Eine Spezifikation seitens GC.com für Wherigo gibt es wahrscheinlich nicht wirklich, so daß eine 100%-ige Implementierung nicht möglich sein wird. Vielleicht kann man eine mögliche Euphoriewelle mit dem zukünftigen Wherigo2.0 nutzen und das dann hoffentlich besser dokumentierte System implementieren. Beim gocacher.de gab es mal einen Artikel dazu, das im 1.Quartal 2013 was kommen soll in Richtung Wherigo2.0 seitens GC.com. Wir werden sehen…

    I quickly had a change to test the application and here are couple of improvement ideas:

    In http://www.geocaching.com you can change the coordinates of the geocache. So in practice when a unknown cache is solved, you would like to change the coordinates to the cache. It would be very important that the application would show the location based on the changed coordinates, not with the original. The same logic may apply to other cache types, like multicache, virtual, letterbox, etc. And if the application is able to identify which geocaches has changed coordinates, it would show the icon in some different way, so that you could identity from the icon, which geocache has changed coordinates.

    Otherwise the application looks pretty good. I did not have change to find a cache with this application, but keep on doing good work!!

    • Good point. I will check if the GC-Live-API transmits the changed coordinates. This would be a nice sync between gc.com and the app for the user.

      • The version 1.92 displays the original coordinates of the cache in red color, if changed coordinates exit. The changed coordinates are listed in the stages (stations) page of the cache details. I hope this solves the issue?

      • Well that seems to work, but I would use the changed location to display the cache on the map. That bogus coordinate (original coordinate) is irrelevant. It is more important to see the cache located in the changed coordinates rather than in original coordinates.Since that is the place you are actually interested.

        Also some kind of filtering for not solved mysteries would be nice. Also a way to display the icon in some other way to make it visible in the map view that that mystery or multi or some other cache is displayed using the changed coordinates.

    I haven’t had change to use WP nor this application but one thing that it really important in geocaching applications, is to have capability to define custom (user defined) map servers. It seems that this application provides pretty many predefined map servers, but that is not enough, since there are a lot of different maps available in different countries. For me getting topo maps working in geocaching application is so important that I would not buy an application that does not provide that functionality. The projection used with OSM and Google are so common that pretty many map uses the same projection, so implementing support for new projections is not required, just to have capability to add custom maps (in this case just an URL in some predefined format e.g. url/[INVZ]/[X]/[Y].png)

      sounds good. Some month ago I struggeled with me, to decide if such an option is good for the end-user, because it is not very easy to understand for everybody. But if you ask for it, it shows me there are people out there who need this. Nice. I will see to implement this in the next time.
      You shourly will also download this custom-maps for offline use… But the user has to decide if it is allowed to bulk-download this content, it is his own custom link 🙂

  71. Hm, irgendwie check ich das mit den Stationen beim Multicache nicht sollten da nich noch Koordinaten oder sowas stehn?

    • Koordinaten sind (derzeit) keine zu sehen. An sich will man ja auch nur zu der Station per Karte hinlaufen. Da reicht es wenn die Station als Ziel gewählt wird (Go-Knopf drücken während man auf der Station-Seite ist) und man dann eben einfach dahin läuft per Karte. Die Koordinaten nützen da eher wenig, es sei denn man nutzt ein externes GPS-Gerät, aber das braucht man ja heutzutage nicht mehr, weil ein Smartphone kann es genauso.
      Ich werd aber zur Sicherheit die Koordinaten mit in die Stationsauflistung einbauen.

      • Hehe ich bin altmodisch und nutze vorsichtshalber noch ein Garmin GPSMap 62 stc 😉

        hab noch eine Bitte ^^ bei den Stationen sind bei einigen Geocaches Hinweise oder Rätsel mit rein geschrieben kann man das so gestalten das man dies auch
        lesen kann?

        • Aha, erwischt. Externe Hilfe hinzugezogen. Naja im tiefen Wald hat ein ext.GPS vielleicht etwas bessere Chancen mit dem GPS-Empfang.

          Die Stationen die aufgelistet sind, sollten der Stationsliste auf der gc.com-Seite entsprechen, die unter der Cachebeschreibung steht. Die Stationsliste enthält manchmal weniger Text, als in der eigentlichen Cachebeschreibung zur Station steht. Manche Cache-Owner sparen sich die Stationstexte, weil sich es in der Cachebeschreibung ja schon erläutert haben.
          Gibt es da ein bestimmten Beispiel-Cache wo es nicht klappt? (GC-Code)

          Stimmt, bei dem Cache fehlen einige Stationen in der Anzeige. Liegt wohl an den fehlenden Koordinaten, die stehen nur auf “???”. Dieser Fall wurde wohl nicht mit bedacht. Ich werte das mal als Bug und gelobe Besserung.

  72. Könnte man das evntl. auch so in der Kartenansicht machen, dass wenn man mit dem Fdenkreuz was in der Kartenmitte sich befindet und man geht über einen Geocache damit, dass der Name und GC-Code angezeigt wird oder funzt das nicht? 🙂

  73. Erstmal muss ich sagen super App 😉
    Dann hätte ich noch eine Bitte 🙂 bei anderen WindowsPhone Apps ist es möglich, wenn ich mit dem Finger vom oberen Rand in den Bildschirm hinein “ziehe”, dass eine Status Bar (Akkuladezustand, WIFI) angezeigt wird lässt sich sowas auch bei Maaloo einbauen. Würde nämlich gerne wissen ob ich noch mit WIFI verbunden bin oder outdoor wie voll mein Akku noch ist ohne die App beenden zu müssen.
    Und evtl. (also nich als meckern ansehn), dass man auch die deaktivierten Caches auf der Karte sieht nur vllt grau, sodas man weis sie sind deaktiviert (gibt ja meistens noch welche die man dennoch logen kann ^^)
    Und nochmals vielen Dank für so ne super Geocaching app fürs Windows Phone 😀

    • Danke und schön das dir die App gefällt 😉
      Zu dem Wifi/Batterie-Status der Hinweis. Wenn man auf ein Element der Standard-Icons in der Statusleiste drückt, erscheinen auch die anderen System-Icons und verschwinden nach paar Sekunden wieder. Ein Drücken auf z.B. die Uhr bringt also auch die anderen System-Icons zum Vorschein.

      In der Karte die deaktivierten Caches auszugrauen wäre natürlich nicht schlecht. Werd ich mal für die nächste Version vorsehen.

        … das hast Du wohl falsch verstanden.

        Starte maaloo einfach mal, starte die Kartenansicht “View” und tippe dann mal mit dem Finger oben in der Statusanzeige auf die Uhr. Dann bekommst Du auch die Batterie und den WIFI Satuts “kurz” angezeigt.

        hmmm, anscheinend ist bei dir das “System Tray” nicht verfügbar oder deaktiviert.
        – starte Karte – drücke drei Punkte unten rechts – wähle Options – Seite View auswählen – bei Map Elements “Show System Tray” aktivieren
        dann guck nochmal auf der Karte, ob dann oben eine Uhr und weitere Anzeigen sichtbar sind

    – possibility to set and save own waypoints from within the app (for multi and mystery caches)
    – set compass points (like 254 m and 37 °)
    – save complete cachelists offline
    – full html support for cache infos, since most listings are not shown correct

      Thanks for your suggestions.
      – to add a waypoint for a multi station you can go to the favorites and add a favorite waypoint and go to this favorite waypoint. The next version of maaloo will have a short-link in the map to add a waypoint faster.
      – to set a compass point you can also add an favorite waypoint and use the bearing function for an angle and distance.
      – complete lists of nearby caches can be saved as favorites in the next version
      – you can switch to the online version of the cache in the menu of the cache details. Perhaps a future version will have an internal html-support.

      The next version of maaloo will be released end of october.

Hello, I am thinking of buying the maaloo app. However, the two main things that discourage me are the exception thrown upon no available internet connection and searching for the online caches (even though I did not want to search live api), and the second one is no support for vector maps (it would be nice if I could download them from dropbox)

    • Hi Pavel,
      I am not sure what you mean with the exception. You can disable the GC-Live API layer in the map and the Nearby-search makes sense only with an enabled internet connection.
      The ability to use vector maps is planned for a future update but not in the near future, at least 6 month. The mapsforge-project currently does not suppport C# for easy implementation.
      But maaloo is always worth to be bought. 😉

      • Hi, thanks for such quick reply. Today I bought maaloo and went geocaching. However, I encountered another two exceptions – first one occured when my devices display shut down and I tried to awake it (navigation to the cache had been active by then), and the second one appeared when I had go to cache mode active, set up a custom waypoint (via favorites) and selected “go to”.
        Although I really like this app, the exceptions are really annoying.

        • I will try to fix the exceptions. On my device (HTC HD7) this exceptions are not thrown, but I will analyse the stack traces (exception reports) reported from Microsoft.

    ich habe heute erst die Test-Version heruntergeladen und damit gespielt
    Da ich dort keine Waypoints von Dropbox herunterladen konnte, habe ich die Vollversion gekauft.

    Vielleicht schildere ich einmal, wofür ich maaloo gerne nutzen wollte – nämlich nicht für Geocaching:

    Mitte September fliege ich für ein paar Tage nach Istanbul und werde dort voraussichtlich kein UMTS haben und auch nur eingeschränkt WLAN.
    Und ich würde gerne durch die Stadt gehen und sightseeing machen und dabei anstatt einer Stadtkarte halt eine Karte auf dem Nokia Lumia 800 anschauen.

    Nokia Navigation kann zwar Karten für offline-Nutzung herunterladen, aber dann kann ich mehr oder weniger damit nur navigieren (immerhin), aber nicht einfach nachschauen, wo ich denn bin, wo mein Ziel ist etc.
    Nokia Karten und Bing Karten brauchen eine Internetverbindung

    Outdoor Navigation ist umständlich zu handhaben und der Download für offline klappt nicht fehlerfrei.

    Und deswegen habe ich mir maaloo angeschaut 
    Karten download einfach, auf der Karte hin- und herschieben und zoomen einfach.

    Jetzt bin ich gerade nur ratlos, ob ich das weitere richtig mache:

    Ich suche mir auf Google Earth eine Sehenswürdigkeit heraus, z.B. die Hagia Sofia (41° 0’30.24″N = 41° 0.504′ / 28°58’48.11″E = 28° 58.802′)
    Google Earth Daten müssen ja leider umgewandelt werden, also ab mit der gespeicherten .kml über einen Konverter http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do in eine .gpx umgewandelt.
    Damit dann auf Dropbox und in maaloo importiert.

    Jetzt dachte ich, dass ich die damit unter die Favoriten bekomme und einfach abrufen kann.
    Aber die sind ja als Waypoints hinterlegt

    Und nun hänge ich ein bißchen.

    Vielleicht denke ich ja auch viel zu kompliziert und das geht viel einfacher.
    Oder ist doch maaloo für meinen Anwendungszweck nicht so das richtige?

    Mit Sicherheit kann ich auf alle Fälle sagen: die anderen Pseudo-Stadtführer-Karten-Apps sind ziemlich schlecht – da ist maaloo schon mal um Längen besser in der Bedienung 

      Das ist natürlich eine Idee, daß maaloo auch .kml-Dateien versteht, werd ich mal vormerken.
      Es stimmt, man kann “normale” Wegpunkte nicht zu Favoriten machen. Das geht auf der Waypoints-Seite nur, wenn die Punkte sich im Nearby-Radius befinden, weil sie nur dann in der Liste erscheinen.
      Das wäre auch noch eine Verbesserungsmöglichkeit, daß man die Liste nicht nur nach Entfernung auflisten könnte oder die Entfernung zumindest auch größer sein kann.
      An sich hat man aber keinen größeren Vorteil, wenn die Wegpunkte Favoriten sind, außer das man sie editieren kann.
      Um sie auf der Karte anzuzeigen, reicht es sie unter Layer als Datei auszuwählen. Dann kann man sie genauso sehen und als Ziel anwählen.

  77. Hallo Oliver,

    ich habe heute Nachmittag die neue Version 1.7 mal “indoor” getestet. Dabei sind mir folgende Sachen (Bugs?) aufgefallen:

    – Im Bereich Waypoints – Collection funktioniert die Filterfunktion leider nicht. (keine Reaktion)
    – Events werden auf der Karte nur als rotes Dreieck dargestellt, nicht als Symbol
    – Events lassen sich nicht ausfiltern bzw. verschwinden von der Karte wenn man die Tradis ausfiltert

    Da ich mir gerne aus GSAK eine Cacheliste bestimmter Caches als GPX.zip in maaloo importiere ist mir folgendes aufgefallen:

    – GPX Ver. 1.0 ohne Childwaypoints lassen sich problemlos importieren
    – GPX Ver. 1.0 mit Childwaypoints lassen sich zwar importieren, aber die Caches und Childwaypoints werden in den Listen wie selbsterstellte Favoritenwaypoints dargestellt und keine Cachebeschreibung ist vorhanden
    – GPX Ver. 1.1 ohne Childwaypoints werden auch nur als Waypoint gelistet, ohne Cachebeschreibung (sowie oben)
    – GPX Ver. 1.1 mit Childwaypoints werden auch nur als Waypoint gelistet, ohne Cachebeschreibung (sowie oben)

    Bei Import von GPX Ver. 1.1 Dateien (Pocketquerys) von Groundspeak und selbst beim Download via API ist die Darstellung des Caches in Bezug auf Listing und Childwaypoints (Stationen) tadellos.
    Gerne kann ich dir GSAK-GPX-Dateien in den unterschiedlichen Versionen für Tests zur Verfügung stellen, wenn Du selber GSAK nicht nutzen solltest.

    Ansonsten habe ich ja schon in meinem “Reply” zuvor noch andere Sachen angesprochen.

    Ich hoffe ich habe dich jetzt nicht allzusehr “überfahren” mit meinen “Replys”. Ich werde in den nächsten Tagen auch Outdoor testen und berichten, wenn es dir recht ist.

      Die GPX-Importfunktion ist für das GC.com-Format gebaut. Eventuell hat GSAK hier paar Spezialitäten.

    vielen Dank für die Umsetzung unserer Vorschläge! Ich bin schwer begeistert! 🙂 Und auch das neue Layout find ich sehr gelungen!

    Könnte aber sein, dass ich schon einen Bug gefunden habe: Im Bereich Waypoints – Collection funktioniert die Filterfunktion leider nicht.
    Im Bereich Map – View lässt sich die Filterfunktion problemlos starten.

    Mir ist schon in der letzten Version aufgefallen, dass wenn man manuell einen neuen Waypoint im Favorites Menu erstellt und in ihn dann nachträglich die Koordinate editiert, keine “OK und Cancel Buttonsleiste” und “Set as Target” Häkchen mehr zur Verfügung steht und dann auch zwei Symbole (alte Koordinate und neue Koordinate) auf der Karte sichtbar sind.

    Zudem hoffe ich, dass Du es mir nicht übel nimmst, wenn ich schon mit neuen Wünschen für “Erweiterungen” daher kommen, wo Du gerade eine neue Version veröffentlicht hast:

    denn ich wollte mal nachfragen, ob in der Filterfunktion die Stufen für Diificulty und Terrain noch weiter verfeinert werden könnten um auch die Zwischenstufen 1,5 / 2,5 / 3,5 / 4,5 filtern zu können.
    Gerne hätte ich auch noch zusätzliche Symbole für Letterbox, Webcam und Virtual für die Kartendarstellung und auch im Filter.

    • ich hätte da noch einen Wunsch im Bezug auf die selbsterstellten Waypoints:

      wenn man einen selbsterstellten Waypoint auf der Karte anklickt und öffnet hat man auch keine Buttonleiste, so wie auch im Favoritenmenu. Hier wären auch Buttons wie “OK” (nach dem Editieren), “Go” und “Delete” sinnvoll und zusätzlich vielleicht auch der “Center Map” Button im Falle einer Koordinatenänderung.

      schön das Du so engagiert maaloo nutzt und neue Wünsche bringts. Irgendwann bekommst du dafür einen maaloo-Verdienstpreis 😉

      Den Bug muss ich leider bestätigen, der ist mir durch die Lappen gegangen. Von der Waypoints-Seite aus kann man keine Filter setzen, nur von der Karte aus. Schaaadeee. Aber die nächste Version kommt bestimmt…

      Das mit den Favoriten und Koordinate ändern geht bei mir eigentlich ganz gut. Geänderte Koordinaten werden übernommen und es erscheint kein zweiter Punkt.

      Die Wünsche für die halben Stufen für Difficulty und Terrain sind notiert. Die Symbole für die anderen Typen auch.

    auch ich möchte mich bei Dir dafür bedanken, dass Du das Programm immer weiter verbesserst und hier auch entsprechendes schnelles Feedback gibst!

    Ich hätte da aber noch eine Frage:

    Wie sieht den die Zukunft für maaloo aus, wenn Windows Phone 8 auf den Markt kommt? Bleibst Du dann der Version 7.5 bzw. 7.8 treu und entwickelst Du das Programm innerhalb dieses Systems weiter, oder wirst Du dann auf WP 8 wechseln?

    Da ich mein HTC Titan gerade erst neu habe, wollte ich nicht gleich auf ein neues Handy wechseln.

      keine Sorge, ich hab auch keine Lust mir andauernd ein neues Handy zu kaufen, nur weil dann eine 8 vorm Komma steht. Soweit ich das verstanden hab sind die 7.8 und 8.0 weitgehend identisch. Auch softwaretechnisch laufen die 7.5-Apps auf der 8.0. Der App-Markt für die 8.0 wäre ja sonst auch ziemlich leer, wenn da nur 8.0-only Apps laufen würden. Mal sehen wie es in 2 Jahren aussieht, aber vorerst ist der Fokus voll auf 7.5 und 7.8.

  81. Habe gerade mal versucht, aus maaloo einen Cache zu loggen. Allerdings konnte ich mit der “Enter” Taste keinen Absatz erzeugen. Der Log wird zum endlosen Satz.

    Zunächst einmal muss ich sagen, dass mir die App soweit sehr gut gefällt. Schon alleine das Cachen und Downloaden der Maps ist im Vergleich zur offiziellen GC Live App ein echter Vorteil. 🙂

    Ein paar Vorschläge/Anmerkungen hätte ich da noch für zukünftige Versionen:

    – Integration einer Suche nach GC-Codes (also GCxxxx), um direkt bestimmte Caches zu finden
    – Speichern von Caches zur Archivierung (vgl. Backpack in der GC Live App)
    – Funktionen für Trackables (loggen, drop, visit etc.)
    – Inaktive Caches in der Übersicht/Karte kenntlich machen
    – Weitere Logs (zeigt nur die letzten 5) und Caches nachladen bei Erreichen des Listenendes
    – Option, um den WP System Tray einzublenden. So sieht man, z.B. die Uhrzeit überall in der App

        erstmal Danke für das Lob und deine Vorschläge!
        Die Trackables und Attribute kommen mit der nächsten Version. Das mit den inaktiven Caches kommt mit in die Filterkriterien rein (“Hide inactive caches”). Die anderen Punkte sind notiert und werden berücksichtigt.
        Der Fehler mit den Map-Downloads ist mir noch gar nicht aufgefallen, wird natürlich eliminiert.

    ich hätte da schon wieder einen Anfrage für eine weitere “Funktion”. Wäre es möglich für die angelegten Favorites-Waypoints oder auch importierten Waypoints eine “Show me on map – Kartensprungfunktion” einzubauen?

    Wenn man die “Adressen” Suchfunktion nutzt, kann man sich ja aus den Suchergebnissen entsprechnde Favorites-Waypoints anlegen. Wenn man sich diese dann per “Show me on Map” Funktion auf der Karte anzeigen lassen könnte, kann man sich über die API Schnittstelle recht einfach alle Caches der Umgebung anzeigen zu lassen.

Hallo Oliver, ich habe eine frage was muss ich einstellen das das Programm unter gespertem Bildschirm weiter läuft, das heist wenn der Bildschirm abschaltet, geht immer wieder mein Kompass aus, und braucht etwas für sich neu zu aktualiesieren. Kann mann das unter Einstellungen ierget wie einstellen, oder was kann ich sonst tun!

    • Das hängt mit den Energiespareigenschaften vom Windows Phone 7 zusammen. Das macht Microsoft von sich aus, das ist sozusagen Standard. Ich werd mal sehen, ob man das irgendwie beeinflußen kann. Aber Microsoft achtet bei der Freigabe der Apps darauf, das sie energiesparend mit dem Phone umgehen. Zu sehr stressen kann man das Thema “im Hintergrund weiterlaufen” also nicht. In Version 1.8 wird das Tracking in maaloo Einzug halten. Damit wird die App dann auch Hintergrundaufgaben-fähig werden müssen, zwecks Aufzeichnung der zurückgelegten Strecke. Dabei kann man vielleicht auch den Kompass an lassen (optional).
      Aktuell geht es aber nicht.

    • Upps, da hat sich ein Bug in der Version 1.6 eingeschlichen. Mit den Umbauarbeiten wegen der Geocachingfunktionen, sind die normalen Wegpunkte wohl hinten runter gefallen. Die normalen Wegpunkte werden ausgefiltert. Skandalös. Wenn man nicht alles nochmal testet… In Version 1.7 geht das wieder, versprochen! (In etwa 3-4 Wochen)
      Damit gehen erstmal nur selbst angelegte Wegpunkte.

  88. Hallo, ich habe mir Heute Ihre APP gekauft funtioniert auch alles Super, wie bekomme ich das hin das ich mir GPX Routen oder GPX Tracks von meiner Dropbox runterladen kann. Ich kann sie zwar runter laden aber bekomme beim Laden immer eine fehler meldung: The waypoints of the file Tour.gpx are now enabled for the map and the waypoints list
    woran kann das liegen habe ich eine falsche datei geladen und wenn ja wo bekomme ich richtige Dateien zum runterladen in meiner Dropbox und dann in Ihr Programm.

      die Meldung die da kommt ist keine Fehlermeldung, eher eine positive Bestätigung, daß die Wegpunkt-Datei nun für die Karte und die Wegpunkteliste aktiviert ist. Aktuell werden nur Wegpunkte unterstützt, keine Tracks. Tracks wird es aber ab der Version 1.8 geben, die voraussichtlich so im September/Oktober erscheint.

  90. Darf ich noch mal “Verbesserungswünsche” äußern?

    Bei der heutigen Cachesuche habe ich etwas länger benötigt, um einen Geocache ausfindig zu machen. Ich habe dabei immer wieder den Cache neu per “GO TO” anwählen müssen, um mich besser annähren zu können. Es war auf Dauer etwas unpraktisch, dass ich immer wieder die Meldung bekam, dass ich mein Ziel erreicht hätte.
    Wäre es möglich, dass die GO TO Funktion solange erhalten bleibt, bis man sie abwählt oder einen neuen Cache anwählt?

    Zudem halte ich das Handy nicht permanent im Blick, wenn ich auf Cachesuche bin. Wenn ich ungefähr weiß, wie ich gehen muss, schalte ich das Display ab, halte das Handy in der Hand oder hab es in der Tasche und folge dem Weg. Optimal wäre es, wenn das Programm auch bei abgeschalteten Display im Hintergrund weiterhin die Position bestimmt und dann einen einfachen akustischen Annährungsarlam mit Vibration bei vielleicht 50m oder 30m hätte und bei Ankunft am Ziel dann vielleicht einen doppelten Annährungsarlam mit Vibration. So rennt man nicht am Ziel vorbei und man muss nicht permanent das Display an und im Auge haben.
    Fände ich sehr praktisch, falls sich das umsetzen lassen würde.

      Das klingt vernünftig. Wenn man mehrmals am Ziel vorbei kommt, reicht es wenn es einmal ein Signal gibt. Danach wird man eh mit dem Blick gebannt auf das Display sehen, um dann mit dem Handy am Cache anzustoßen, wenn das GPS nur genau genug wäre. 😉

      Das mit dem Annäherungsalarm ist auch gut. Im StandBy-Modus die GPS-Signale aufzeichnen wird sowieso kommen, wegen den Tracking-Funktionen. Bei der Gelegenheit kann man dann auch das “sprechende Cache-Navi” mit einbauen.

  91. Nach einem Softwarefehler (Cache blieb permanent auf der Karte vorhanden, obwohl keine GPX geladen war), habe ich versucht durch Deinstalation und Neuinstalation den Fehler zu beseitigen.

    Bei der Neuinstalation aus dem Marketplace war ich jedoch sehr verblüft, dass durch den geänderten Preis von 2,49 € ich jetzt wohl wieder zur Kasse gebeten werden, obwohl ich erst vor ein paar Wochen das Programm noch für 1,99 € gekauft habe. Ich konnte nur die Trailversion downloaden. Ist das so gewollt?

    • Okay, hat sich erledigt. Wenn ich wieder der Kaufoption folge, dann wird automatisch erkannt, dass ich das Programm doch schon erworben habe und ich kann die Vollversion installieren.

    darf man hier auch noch ein paar Verbesserungswünsche äussern?

    Ich würde mir wünschen, dass es noch möglich wäre aus der Cachebeschreibung über einen Link das Cachelisting online bei GC zu öffnen. Das wäre ein schneller Weg, um Spoilerbilder zu erreichen.
    Zudem ist es schwierig, über die Berührung des Touchscreens einen exakten Waypoint der eigenen Position zu erstellen. Da lag ich bisher immer daneben. Mit einer zusätzlichen Taste für das “Waypoint erstellen an eigener Position”, die man genau wie die Zoomtasten auf dem Screen ein- und ausblenden kann, wäre es einfacher und exakter.

      natürlich kann man jederzeit Verbesserungswünsche äußern. Das ist ja auch der Sinn von diesem Blog.

      Die Idee mit dem Online-Link ist ganz gut. Das werd ich für die V1.7 mit vorsehen. Mit der neuen V1.6 kann man über die Live-API die Gallery eines Caches anzeigen. Spoilerbilder sind da meist auch zu finden.

      Das Hinzufügen eines Wegpunktes über die Karte kann man in den Optionen wieder abschalten, da es manchmal stört, wenn man statt eines Geocaches ins “Leere” gegriffen hat und stattdessen ein Wegpunkt angelegt werde sollte.
      Einen Wegpunkt an der Bildschirmmitte anlegen, da wo das Fadenkreuz zu sehen ist, geht über die Favoriten und dort Hinzufügen (großes Plussymbol). Das ist zwar nicht direkt über die Map zu erreichen aber immerhin exakt. 😉

  93. Sehr geehrter Herr Michael,

    vielen Dank für ihr maaloo Programm. Ich nutze es seit Kurzem und bin bisher sehr zufrieden damit. Natürlich bin ich gespannt wie die Entwicklung des Programms weiter geht und welche weiteren Funktionen von ihnen noch geplant sind.

    Ich nutze ihr Programm in Kombination mit GSAK. Bisher exportiere ich mir aus GSAK ausgewählte Caches als GPX-Dateien in Dropbox und importiere sie mir von dort in maaloo. Das funktioniert soweit recht gut und bei vorhandenen WLAN sind die 3 bis 4 MB großen GPX Dateien auch flott übertragen.

    Dummerweise habe ich im Büro, oder auf Dienstreisen nicht immer ein WLAN zur Verfügung und meine Internetflat möchte ich für so große GPX Dateien nur ungern belasten. Daher wäre eine Übertragung der GPX Dateien per USB zusätzlich natürlich optimal.

    Im Internet habe ich heute zufällig einen interessanten “Artikel” über einen “Windows Phone 7 USB Storage Enabler” bei chip online gefunden. Mit diesem Programm kann man das Handy als Festplatte auf dem Arbeitsplatz des Computer sichtbar machen. Ich habe es versucht und es funktioniert. Es werden die “Bilder”, “Musik” und “Viedeo” Ordner des Handys angezeigt.

    Hier könnte man jetzt auch gut einen GPX Ordner anlegen, um GPX Dateien von GC oder von GSAK via USB Kabel abzulegen. Allerdings müsste maaloo dann nur noch in der Lage sein, auf diesen Ordner zuzugreifen.

    Wäre sowas machbar, oder würde Microsoft so einen Funktion verhindern?

    • Hallo Roland,

      der Weg über das USB-Kabel ist für mich relativ neu. Ich dachte bisher, Microsoft will den Kabelweg eher aussterben lassen und voll auf die drahtlose Übertragung setzen. Mit Windows Phone 8 kommt wohl aber wieder die gute alte SD-Karte zurück und da hoffentlich auch die Möglichkeit in irgendwelche Ordner zu speichern, statt nur in einige wenige vorgegebene Ordner.
      Ob man mit Windows Phone 7 auf andere als auf die vorgegebenen Ordner zugreifen kann, müsste ich noch prüfen. Ich glaube kaum das das geht, dann wäre dieser Weg wohl schon bekannter. Aber vielleicht hat es nur noch niemand wirklich probiert.
      Wenn ich eine Möglichkeit finde, werde ich sie einbauen.

    erstmal muss ich sagen, die App gefällt mir sehr gut, weswegen ich sie auch gekauft habe. Nur was ich noch vermisse, wie kann ich verschiedene Wegpunkte bei Multis auswählen/hinzufügen? Wenn dies möglich wäre, hätten Sie ein rießen Argument gegen die offizielle GC-Live App. Ich kenne es so z.B. aus Cachebox! Dort kann ich selber Wegpunke anlegen und sehe auch alle Wegpunkte eines Caches, sofern vorhanden.

    Und gibt es eine Möglichkeit sich auch alle Caches als Liste anzeigen zu lassen? Ich meine es mal gesehen zu haben.

    Und noch eine allgemeine Frage: Die GPX-Dateien von GC.com enthalten immer eine große GPX und eine GPX mit .wpts. Ich habe beide Inportiert, aber bei Layer kann ja nur eine GPX ausgewählt werden. Was passiert in Ihrer App mit der wpts-Datei?

    Ich freue mich schon auf das nächste Update. Die App wird immer besser 🙂

      schön das dir die App gefällt und danke für dein Feedback.
      An der App wird ständig weiterentwickelt. In eine der nächsten Updates werde ich deine Wünsche sicher mit aufnehmen.
      Für die nächsten Versionen wird es mehr Funktionalität für die Cacherpraxis geben, wie Peilung und Field Notes.
      Die Listenfunktion kommt auch (wieder) mit rein, diesmal mit mehr Optionen.
      Die Live-API von geocaching.com soll auch integriert werden, so das die App rundherum wie für das Geocaching geschaffen ist, online wie offline.
      Es geht nicht mehr ohne 😉

      Zu deiner Frage mit dem Anlegen von eigenen Wegpunkten. Das geht jetzt schon über die Karte -> Favoriten-Knopf -> Favorit hinzufügen.
      Die Wegpunkte werden dann zwar als “Favoriten” gewertet, sind aber prinzipiell als normale Wegpunkte verwendbar.
      Den Text des Wegpunktes kann man für Notizen zur Multi-Station verwenden.
      Nach erfolgreichem Fund des Final kann man die angelegten Wegpunkt-“Favoriten” wieder löschen, nach dem man z.B. das Log geschrieben hat.

      Mehrere GPX-Dateien in der Layerauswahl zu bestimmen, ist aktuell nicht möglich. Das wird aber in einer der nächsten Updates erweitert.
      Ursprünglich sollte so die Anzahl an darzustellenden Wegpunkten auf der Karte begrenzt werden, aus Performance-Gründen. Aber ein paar zusätzliche Wegpunkte der Caches, wie die aus der wpts-Datei, sollten nicht stören. Guter Hinweis.
